It begins at your front door – with boxes, bags and the question of where the tenth jacket is supposed to go. If you want to pack a campervan properly for your holiday , you above all need a system. In a motorhome, what counts is not how much fits in, but what is really useful on the road, safely stowed and makes travelling pleasant.

A well-packed campervan does not feel full, but free: the kitchen works, clothes are quickly to hand, the drive stays stable and you do not have to unload half the vehicle at the pitch first. Especially on a first rental trip, a clear order helps more than any spontaneous shopping list.

Plan first, then pack your campervan properly for the holiday

Before the first bag goes into the vehicle, it is worth looking at your route, travel season and fellow travellers. A week of summer holiday at Lake Garda calls for something different from an autumn trip to the North Sea or a trip with small children and a dog. Also check what is already on board in your rental camper. Many vehicles have basic kitchen equipment, crockery, camping furniture or safety equipment. What is included at handover should not be packed twice.

Plan by area rather than by individual item: clothing, kitchen, sleeping, bathroom, outdoor area and vehicle. That way gaps show up faster – and anything superfluous stays at home. It is especially practical to draw up a shopping list for fresh food in advance. Long-life items can be ready earlier; chilled goods only go into the fridge shortly before departure.

A good rule is: pack for a few washes, not for every single day of the holiday. Most campsites have washing machines, and light clothing dries quickly. That saves space and noticeably reduces weight.

Weight and storage: what decides a relaxed drive

A motorhome has plenty of storage space, but its payload is not unlimited. Payload covers everything that travels in addition to the unladen weight: people, luggage, water, food, bicycles, gas cylinders and accessories. If the vehicle is too heavy, it is not only driving comfort that suffers. Braking distance, road holding and compliance with the maximum permissible weight also become an issue.

Heavy items therefore belong at the bottom and as close to the middle of the vehicle as possible. Crates of drinks, tinned food or tools are better off in the lower storage space than in the overhead lockers. Light items such as towels, clothing or bedding can go up top. Make sure that cupboards and drawers are reliably closed before you drive. Loose items quickly become a risk in an emergency stop.

Plan your water deliberately

Depending on the tank size, a full fresh water tank can quickly add many extra kilos on the scales. If you are heading straight to a campsite with hook-ups, you often do not need to set off with the tank completely full. For the first stretch, a partial fill is enough in many cases. It is different if you want to stay off-grid or expect little infrastructure. Then water is comfort and reserve at the same time.

The waste water tank should also be empty before you set off. That is lighter, cleaner and protects your payload. At vehicle handover , feel free to ask about tank sizes and sensible filling for your planned route. At Friedas Camper, exactly this practical briefing is part of a carefree start.

What should always be within reach in the campervan

Some things you only need at the pitch, others already at the petrol station or on a break. Everything that matters on the road should not disappear deep into the rear storage. That includes vehicle documents, driving licence, rental papers, hi-vis vests, first-aid kit, warning triangle, phone charging cable, sunglasses and a small bag of medication.

A separate departure kit also makes sense: keys, toll or parking cards, your destination, wallet and a water bottle. That way you avoid the typical search just before setting off. For families, a small travel box with snacks, activities and wet wipes is worthwhile. If you are travelling with a dog, put the lead, bowl, water, towel and poo bags within immediate reach too.

Kitchen and supplies: buy less, cook better

The campervan kitchen is compact, but it can do a surprising amount. The key is not to take supplies as if for a whole household. Plan simple dishes with ingredients that can be used more than once. Pasta, rice, spices, oil, coffee, long-life milk, breakfast ingredients and a few snacks make a good base. It is better to buy fresh fruit, vegetables and bread on the way or at your destination.

Store food in sealable boxes. That keeps cupboards tidy and stops things sliding about on bends. Glass bottles are heavy and fragile – alternatives in small, unbreakable containers are often more practical. Chilled goods should be packed so that they do not have to be rearranged at the first stop.

A few tried-and-tested utensils are usually enough for the kitchen. A good knife, chopping board, spatula, tin opener, dishcloth and tea towels are more helpful than an overfilled drawer. Before the start of your trip, check which kitchen equipment is already on board. With rental vehicles, the scope and details differ by model.

Organise clothing, bathroom and sleeping cleverly

Soft bags are usually better in a campervan than large hard-shell suitcases. They are easier to fit into cupboards, under beds or in the storage space. Packing cubes or simple fabric bags separate clothing by person or category. That makes everyday life in a small space much more relaxed, especially when several people are travelling.

Take clothing that can be combined. Besides T-shirts and shorts, always bring a warm layer and weatherproof shoes. Even in high summer, evenings by the lake, wind on the coast or a rain shower can turn cool. A light rain poncho or a compact jacket is often more sensible than several thick jumpers.

The same principle applies in the bathroom: small sizes save space. Shampoo, shower gel and toothpaste are easy to decant into travel containers. Microfibre towels dry quickly and need little storage space. For campsites, bathing shoes or flip-flops are a must. If you are travelling with children, also think of a night light, a favourite cuddly toy and a small emergency selection for minor injuries.

Outdoor area: comfort that makes the pitch better

Your holiday does not only take place in the vehicle. Especially in good weather, the space in front of the campervan becomes the living and dining area. Camping chairs and a table are often sensible, unless they are already part of the equipment. A small outdoor blanket, pegs for towels, a torch or head torch and an extension cable for the electric hook-up make many evenings simpler.

With accessories, restraint pays off. A barbecue can be lovely, but it is not allowed on every pitch and needs space. Bicycles extend your range, but add weight and vehicle length. If you take them along, check the permitted carrier load, secure the bikes properly and keep an eye on the overhang when manoeuvring. For a short trip, a walk or the bus from the campsite is sometimes enough.

The final check before departure

Everything is packed the evening before – on departure day you only check. Walk through the interior once: are the roof windows and cupboard doors closed? Are there no loose objects on the table, worktop or cab? Are the supports retracted, cables and hose stowed and the bicycles firmly strapped down?

A quick look at tyre pressure, lights and exterior mirrors is also part of it. Adjust the driver's and passenger seat so that you sit comfortably and can see all mirrors well. If you are driving a motorhome for the first time, allow time for the first few kilometres. A campervan is taller, wider and heavier than a car. Drive calmly, keep more distance and consistently watch the height limits on bridges, multi-storey car parks and petrol station canopies.

Last-minute packing list

These things are forgotten particularly often and therefore belong on a short departure checklist:

Driving licence, ID, vehicle and rental documents

Medication, sun cream and insect repellent

Charging cables, power bank and adapters

Cash or card for the pitch, wash block and tolls

Keys for storage compartments, bicycle lock and campsite

Fresh drinking water, snacks and a little something for the first break

The best campervan holiday does not need a stuffed vehicle. It needs room for spontaneous shopping, wet swimming things, souvenirs and the little detours that later become the best memories. Pack thoughtfully, set off calmly and leave some room for freedom along the way.

The first day of your holiday rarely begins at your destination.
